Our Story

The Early Years

My childhood was filled with lots of happy memories playing outdoors and being in the scouts with my friends. Summer holidays were spent with my grandparents in the Isle of Wight and I recall learning so much about the wonders of nature through my grandads eyes.

Escape To The Country

Having originated from Surrey I moved with his wife Vida to her native  Roscommon, Ireland in 1997. Together we later started Black Hen Designs in late 2010 with the idea of designing and creating a beautiful range of quirky illustrations. My wife Vida is a visual artist in her own right specialising in oil painting with a degree in fine art and has had a number of curated shows here in Ireland.  For me drawing isn't something I find come naturally, it was something I had to learn through trial and error, experimenting till I found my own style or form of expression.  But with lots of hard work we are delighted that our designs have grown in popularity with each year stocking many shops through Ireland, the United Kingdom and further afield.

The Start of A New Idea

With a keen passion for nature and all things rural, the Irish countryside became the inspiration for my designs and are now brought to life through the use of vivid colour and exaggerated form. The ideas for many of the drawings can often come from chance encounters and as there’s usually a story behind each one, a playful and uplifting title is given to these quirky contemporary designs.
